Tips & Tricks

Love them or hate them, we can't do without them, so we have put together some quick solutions for the most common problems you are likely to encounter.

 

I have a problem with my sound
Make sure your speakers are working by plugging them into an MP3 player or something similar.     
Try using headphones instead of speakers to see if you can hear any sound.
Make sure your speakers/headphones are plugged into the pale green port.
Check the volume in windows (Start > Programs > Accessories > Entertainment).
Check the volume in the program you are using to play the sound.
If you have a laptop, there may be a separate volume control on the case of the laptop.
Try playing sound from a few different sources like a CD, DVD and the hard drive.

I can't connect to the internet
Is your computer communicating with your modem/router? Look for a little icon in the bottom right hand corner of the monitor (System Tray).  
Turn your modem/router off for one minute then turn it back on. Wait another minute then try Make sure any Usernames and Passwords are correct.
If it is, contact your ISP (Internet Service Provider).
If you are getting the error message “Limited or no connectivity” right-click on the connection and If you are using dial-up, remove any telephone extension cables and faxes from the line.


Windows won't load

Try booting the computer in SAFE MODE (keep tapping F5 as soon as you press the power button. Windows Vista users will then be shown a menu where they need to press F8 to see the SAFE MODE option). Have any CDs or DVDs that were supplied with your computer to hand.

Write down any error message and contact us on 0800 043 1197

If you can, back up all of your important files and folders before calling us just in case the worst happens

I can't see anything on my screen

Restart the computer. Try booting the computer in SAFE MODE (keep tapping F5 as soon as you press the power button).

Unplug the monitor and then plug it in again.

If you can, try another monitor or try your monitor on another computer.

If you are using a laptop, try moving the screen forwards and backwards

My CD\DVD won’t play or burn discs

Try playing or burning different brands of CDs and DVDs.  

Try different CD\DVD playback and burning software.

Make sure your CDs and DVDs are clean.

If the CD or DVD drive won’t open, straighten a paper clip and poke it in the tiny hole at the front of the drive.

Other things to try

Write down any error messages. We can help diagnose the problem. 

Performing a System Restore (Start > All Programs > System Tools > System Restore) often helps.

Check for driver or firmware updates from manufacturers’ websites.

Check for patches or updates for programs and games.

Scan your computer for viruses and spyware. You might have more nasties than you think.
